Ukraine is remarkable in its way to surprise. While both Russia and western experts thought Kyiv would fall in days-only disagreeing on whether this would lead to eventual defeat or victory by Russia- Ukraine decided to change the playbook.
A nation of partisans ,proud Cossack warriors in its blood, was always going to be a challenge in a prolonged occupation- but driving Russia back from Kyiv, holding out for months in Mariupol, and thwarting the Russian push towards Odesa-are nothing short of incredible. As some joke, rather than Ukraine join NATO, perhaps NATO should be joining Ukraine.
As I pointed out here , Kherson is key to the war, as taking this city allows a springboard into Crimea- which would certainly get Russia talking at the minimum.
As I also pointed out in that article, Russia doesn’t give a rats about Donbas and Lugansk- except to give a black eye to Ukraine. And, as predicted, once the Kherson campaign began- troops were quickly pulled from the East in a bid to reinforce the south against Ukraine’s counter-offensive.
