There are two periods under Islamic rule in Spain. One of great tolerance known as the golden age of Judaism, the other was the convert, exile or die type which is when Maimonides lived and became a crypto Jew, then moved to Morocco and was outed there and then had to flee to Palestine and later Egypt, where he served under the Sultan there as a physician. Crypto Jews existed during both the latter Islamic period and the catholic period.
