The mobilzation chaos and lies

On the 23rd of September, I wrote my first article on Russia’s mobilization. It can be found here.

This is a brief addendum as new information comes to light:

  1. One of my students with her husband was on holiday in Turkiye but had to change their plans for return because her husband, an IT worker, had authorities looking for him back in Russia to serve mobilization papers. Thus they flew to Tbilisi instead with not much more than the clothes on their backs, rather than return to Russia. Fortunately, they both work remotely so they will face no real hardship.
  2. In Saint Petersburg the authorities have pressured local government officials for lists of names for mobilization. The police don’t have a list themselves but are required to find personnel. Those who are served papers are told to report to a recruiting office that doesn’t exist- where there are trucks waiting to take away to basic training. The training consists of just 2 weeks and those who showed up at the “recruitment centre” location on the Sunday, are already in basic training yesterday(Monday.) This is corroborated by some recruits reporting back to friends and loved ones. There seems no capacity in this instance to appeal or state you were incorrectly mobilized.
