To me, the most interesting counter argument when it comes to the ownership of Crimea is this: The treaty of Paris which gave Crimea to imperial Russia after the second Russo-Turkish war and had one big fat condition on it: Crimea was to be demilitarised, as was the Black Sea as a whole, and no Naval base was to be built there. It took just 5 years for Russia to break that deal, which made their claim to Crimea null and void. Unfortunately, the Ottomans were the sick man of Europe at the time and couldn't enforce it. But the notion of it belonging to Russia is quite ridiculous.
