Putin and Crimea’s futures are linked. It is his crowning achievement and source of his power. It is inconceivable for him to give it up. Which is why I argue taking Kherson, the gateway to Crimea is key. If Crimea comes under a real threat of being lost, Russia will either escalate to nuclear or be very ready to start talking. Any other scenario is a multi year war or frozen conflict.
