Many Jews had empathy, Gaza was surrounded by left wing peacniks living in kibbutz. People like Dale Silver who spent decades transporting Gazans to Israel for medical treatment. These people all got murdered or kidnapped on October 7. And it wasn't just HAMAS but civilians of Gaza decided to join in and loot and kill too.

In 2005, Jews left Gaza and it had "won". The population was much more freer than the West Bank, indeed had more chance of liberty than any Arab state. Yet they voted for HAMAS who launched a rocket campaign against Israel.

There was a time, from 67 till the second infitada, where there were no checkpoints, separation walls, and Palestinians could freely enter Israel to work etc. Even in recent years, Israel had allowed 18000 Gazans to work in Israel. They were rewarded with some of those Gazans giving information and intelligence to HAMAS.

Us Jews have a different calendar and sense of time. Everything happens in circles and core values of Judaism are rooted in the past.

We have principles like not to treat a stranger in the land any differently, providing that stranger respects us. We had love they neighbour coined by Hillel, one hundred years before the chap from Nazareth quoted the same. But we also have warfare, and October 7 was an act of war by the government of Gaza. A government with wide support. One of our principles is if you show mercy to the enemy it will be your downfall. Several leaders of HAMAS have had life saving medical treatment in Israel, many were releases I previous prisoner exchanges. Sinwar, who launched October 7, is an example of both. The Israeli response is a simple one- the cost of war against Israel must be so high that it would be unthinkable to wage another one.
