Tour De France’s Peloton
When I was in my late teens, I became obsessed with cycling. So much so, I swore I would never own a car (that pledge didn’t last.) I was a gifted sprinter 100–400m in track and field and Captain of my Rugby team.
Though I went quite far in this, despite terrible coordination, it was cycling that captured my attention. First it was the Olympics and track cycling and the “what if?” I changed from a 10.6 for the 100m Sprinter( a pretty serious time and fantastic for Rugby but off the pace for the Olympic glory)- to track cycling? I had instant success with little training, beating a chap who had been Bronze Olympic Medalist in one event, and beating a former Gold Medalist in another. Both wins were from underestimating my raw speed but I lacked the tactical prowess and I never beat these two again. They could suck on my wheel if I was going for it, swoop down from the bank and, besides, in a few years they got faster than I ever was AND had those tactics.
Part of my training also involved a lot of road miles and I would often go for 150km+ rides on the weekends and daily rides of 50km quite easily. I began to love road cycling even more than track, but with my fast twitch musles…
