I absolutely love co.pulsory voting in Australia. Then the nation is responsible for the outcome while in America you can have so many who don't vote then complain about who got in. Then it is the will of the people not just the politically motivated people. I would argue the opposite of what you say- the extremists are more likely to vote while the apathetic do not- thus you get more extreme swings in non compulsory voting.

Plus, it is usually done on a Saturday in Australia and you can have a 'democracy sausage' BBQ and it all becomes quite the event. American elections and which side wins is mostly about turn out. Australians really don't have to worry about that.
