The cost of Putin’s war

I got some news yesterday that has really affected me and I admit to a lot of mixed feelings about it.

I live now in the Republic of Georgia and am married to a lovely Georgian-Armenian woman. Prior to this, I lived 7 years in Russia and I had a Russian girlfriend.

This Russian girl and I had been good friends for years and years and she was keen to get married and start a family and so we discussed getting together romantically. And we tried, but the chemistry just wasn’t there- we were just too good as friends. She visited me here in Georgia but we decided it was not meant to be- and she returned to Russia.

She got involved in a car accident there and a man helped her out of the car wreck and visited her in hospital. No surprise, they fell in love and got married. A year later, they had a child together. I was genuinely happy she realized her dream, even if it wasn’t with me.

We are still friends and keep in touch and I found out yesterday her husband has died? Where? Of couse, Ukraine.

Now, I didn’t know him personally, but he had a beautiful family and a young daughter. They lived in southern Russia where the villages speak Kubanski, a mostly Ukrainian dialect, 70% Ukrainian. It is home to the Kuban Cossacks, who originated in Ukraine. Many of those…
