Happened in the 1940s? Jews were the majority population in both Jerusalem and Gaza in the mid 1800s before Zionism was even thought of. And they were regularly attacked and forbidden to defend themselves, living as second class citizens. It was in 1909 they finally armed themselves. More Jews arrived in the 1920s, all legally buying land and still being met with pogroms, made worse in the 1930s when the British released Al-Husseini from prison. There was a partition deal the Jews were willing to accept in 1937 but the Arabs rejected then the UN partition of 1947 that was also rejected.

Jews have had a continuous presence in that land for thousands of years. And for those scattered throughout the world, for 2000 years we prayed every morning "next year in Jerusalem" while Europeans and Arabs alike told us "to go back where we belong in Palestine" and now complain that we did just that.
