From wannabe to author. Part 1: The books you need.
Learn from a 30 year wannabe who then published 6 books in a year.
“Procrastination your demise is nigh. I shall defeat you tomorrow, if not, the next day.”
It was a combination of my two Aunts introducing me to Thomas Covenant, my own discovery of Lord of the Rings and the consumption of the Dragonlance books- that convinced me that I wanted to be a writer too.
I also owe some thanks to Ms Denton in grade 5, who got my best friend Scott and I to each write a sci-fi story to a certain formula. We had to invent the planet, draw the spaceships and decide on many things. Later, when I got heavily involved in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Scott and I tried to write a story together set in Forgotten Realms.
I then started writing about my own world with a Conan-like barbarian and his dragon, followed by a full world build which became the basis of my first novel. The map of the world, using A4 paper, was bigger than our lounge room. Through out my first marriage I tinkered with it till it was near ready and 400 pages long.
Then my ex-wife, in what she claims was an accident, wiped it from the computer. My next girlfriend after I was divorced, burnt the drafts in a fury. This is not a relationship advice article!
